The M3 Mobile SM20 differs from the SL20 mainly in the scanners available for it and its suitability for low-temperature work. The SM20 can be fitted with an SE5500 Smart Focus scanner rated for a range of up to 14 m, or an optional 6150 mAh battery. It's also available as the SM20F, built to operate down to –30°C.

The SL20, on the other hand, is lighter, has a larger 5.5-inch display, IP67 sealing, and withstands drops from a greater height.

What do the M3 Mobile SM20 and SL20 have in common?

Both models are Android touchscreen terminals with 1D/2D barcode scanning and Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth, and 4G connectivity. In their base configurations, both offer 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. Neither has a full physical keyboard — in form and handling, they behave like ruggedized smartphones.

Both devices use replaceable batteries with hot-swap support. This lets the battery be swapped without shutting down running tasks, reducing the risk of downtime.

Scanner

The scanner configuration is what differentiates the two models' use cases the most. The SL20 can use either the E5 module or the optional SE4710, designed for typical 1D/2D scanning of products, packages, and documents close to the operator.

The SM20 can be fitted with the SE4710 module or the SE5500 scanner with Smart Focus. The manufacturer states a range of 5.6 cm to 14 m for the SE5500. Actual distance depends on factors such as barcode size and quality and reading conditions. That range makes it possible to scan labels on higher rack levels or directly from a forklift cab.

Display, dimensions, and ergonomics

The SL20 has a 5.5-inch HD display, weighs 250 g, and measures 72.7 × 156.8 × 17.55 mm. The larger screen makes it easier to review forms and picking lists, and the slim housing allows comfortable one-handed carrying and operation.

The SM20 is shorter but thicker, measuring 76.4 × 154.6 × 22 mm. It has a 5-inch HD display. Its weight depends on configuration, ranging from 266 g with the standard battery and SE4710 scanner up to 311.6 g with the Smart Focus scanner and extended battery.

Durability, drops, and low temperature

The SL20 offers IP67 sealing — full protection against dust and resistance to brief water immersion under the conditions defined by the standard. It withstands drops onto concrete from 1.5 m, and from 1.8 m with a protective boot. That makes it a good fit for mobile warehouse, courier, and field work, where the device is carried and handled frequently.

The standard SM20 is rated IP65, so it's dust-tight and protected against water jets, but not against immersion. Its stated drop rating is 1.2 m without a boot and 1.5 m with one. Its environmental advantage lies in the availability of the SM20F variant. This version can operate at temperatures from –30 to 60°C and uses a battery optimized for low-temperature performance — relevant in cold stores, freezers, and cold-chain logistics.

Battery and uptime

The SM20 is available with a 4100 mAh battery or an optional 6150 mAh pack, which the manufacturer states enables up to 15 hours of continuous operation. The SL20 uses a 5000 mAh battery, rated by the manufacturer for up to 12 hours. Actual runtime depends on display settings, connectivity, the applications in use, temperature, and scan volume.

For multi-shift operations, proper battery-swap organization and access to spare batteries and charging docks can matter more than raw battery capacity.

System, memory, and connectivity

The SM20 runs Android 11, 12, or 14, has an eight-core 2.0 GHz processor, and comes in a 4/64 GB configuration. The SL20 runs Android 13 with updates supported up to version 15, and is available in 4/64 GB and 8/128 GB variants. The SL20's expanded memory option can be useful with a larger number of installed apps, larger local databases, or longer-term storage of photos and documentation.

Both models support Wi-Fi 5 and 4G. The SM20 uses Bluetooth 5.1 BLE, while the SL20 uses Bluetooth 5.0 BLE. In practice, network coverage, app compatibility with the installed Android version, and the ability to manage terminals centrally will matter more than the Bluetooth version itself.

The stated ranges apply to the optional SE5500 scanner on the SM20 and the SE4710 scanner on the SL20. The manufacturer reports these figures using different test methods; they are not the result of a direct comparative test.

When should you choose the M3 Mobile SM20?

The SM20 is the better fit wherever the main criteria are a longer scan range or extreme operating temperatures:

M3 Mobile SM20 or SL20 – how to decide?

Choose the SM20 with the SE5500 scanner if you need to read barcodes from several meters or more. The SM20F variant is the right call if the terminal needs to operate below –20°C. The SL20 is the better starting point if low weight, a larger display, IP67 sealing, and resistance to frequent drops matter most to you.
